American Career College Educational Foundation

The facts are as distressing as they are real. Our community members who lack a high school credential and educational opportunities often face many more difficulties in life. The data is clear. Those without a high school diploma or who lack financial resources statistically struggle to find meaningful jobs, maintain good health and even find happiness.

The economic costs are significant as well. The impact to Southern California’s competitiveness in a global marketplace can be measured in billions of lost dollars each year due to lower incomes, less tax revenue and increases in social support and intervention.

Here are just some of the numbers that help tell the story:

  • 1 in 4
The number of students in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties who do not complete their high school education. In Orange County it is about 1 in 5.
  • 22,779
The total number of high school dropouts from Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties during the most recent reporting year from the California Department of Education. [Source]
  • 9,367
On average, that’s how much less California high school leavers earn in dollars annually compared to their graduate peers.
  • 412,000
Over a lifetime, high school leavers are estimated to earn on average $412,000 less than those who graduate. [Source]
  • 54,000,000,000
The estimated cost to California in lost wages per year because of lower earnings by non-high school graduates. [Source]
  • 30,000,000
The number of individuals in the U.S. – or about 14% of our nation’s population – who lack a high school credential. [Source]
